Brow Fused Aluminum Oxide (BFAO), commonly known as brown fused alumina, is a robust and versatile synthetic abrasive material.
It is produced in an electric arc furnace at temperatures exceeding 2000°C, where its primary raw material, high-quality bauxite, is melted and fused with small amounts of coke and iron filings.
It has a formula of Al2O3 (>92%) and is recommended for use in bonded abrasives and general industry applications such as grinding, deburring, snagging, and cutting of various materials. It can also be used as a blasting grain, suitable for wet or dry surface preparations. Microgrit powders are used for micro blasting, precision lapping, fine grit grinding, break lining fillers, tumbling, and polishing compounds, among other things.
Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide Safety Summary
| Aspect | Risk Assessment | Key Precautions |
| Health Hazards | Low. May cause mechanical irritation. | Wear a dust mask (e.g., N95) and safety goggles. |
| Fire Hazards | Non-flammable. | No special firefighting measures required. |
| Reactivity | Stable. Does not react dangerously with water or common chemicals. | Keep dry to prevent caking. |
| Environmental Hazards | Minimal environmental impact. | Avoid significant release into waterways. |
| Primary Exposure | Dust generated from grinding, cutting, or blasting. | Ensure adequate ventilation in the work area. |

Storage and handling
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse.
Keep containers tightly closed to prevent moisture absorption (caking) and dust release.
No special temperature control is required.
General Handling: Dust mask, safety glasses, and dust-proof gloves.
High-Dust Operations (e.g., blasting, sweeping): Use a higher level of respiratory protection (e.g., a half-mask respirator).
Avoid raising dust. Clean up using wet sweeping or an industrial vacuum cleaner. Do not use compressed air for cleaning.
