Chromium resources

Chromium resources The abundance of chromium in the Earth's crust is 0.035%, but the resulting chromium ore contains high chromium content. The chromite resources in the near north-south fold belt on the Earth account for more than 95% of the world's total, and the chromium resources in the Precambrian fold belt running through East Africa account for 94% of the world's total.

The Ural Varissi fold belt accounts for about 2%, and the Alpine fold belt accounts for about 2% of the world's total. The geological conditions of chromium ore mineralization in China are not ideal, and chromite belts from south to north have not been found in Cambrian geological regions.

The chromite deposits in Xizang and Yunnan belong to the fold belt of Alpine Age.

The chromite deposits in Xinjiang-Gansu and Qinghai-Inner Mongolia are located in the near east-west fold belt of Hercynian Age. None of them have the conditions to produce very large deposits. The main chrome-containing mineral of industrial value is chrome-spinel, often misreferred to as chromite. There are three most useful chromium spinel minerals: magnesium chromite (Mg, Fe)Cr2O4, hard chromite spinel (Mg, Fe)(Cr, Al)2O4 and aluminum chromite Fe(Cr, Al)2O4. The largest user of chromium ore is the ferroalloy industry, which accounts for about 80% of the total production of chromium ore. It is called metallurgical grade chromium ore in the chrome ore market. High-quality metallurgical grade chromium ore requires Cr2O3>48%, S<0.1%, P<0.1%, Cr2O3: FeO>3 to produce ferrochrome containing Cr>70%. Due to the decreasing of chrome-rich ore, the ore with low chrome-iron ratio is relatively increasing. They can only be used to smelt charge grade ferrochrome.
